Geert van Aarsen, author and creator
Geert van Aarsen has been fascinated by the planets, the sun, the moon, and the stars since childhood. When he considered studying astronomy at university, he felt it was too detached from everyday life and chose instead to stay closer to the “home planet” by pursuing Aerospace Engineering.
He graduated from Delft University of Technology in 1989. After more than a year of travelling to broaden his horizons, he returned to the Netherlands and began a career in financial services, which led him to London in 1997. In 2011, he turned toward his creative side, focusing on writing and historical research.
A trip to Canada’s west coast rekindled his love of the night sky. Seeing Orion rise tall on the horizon after dusk, followed by Sirius, the brightest star, inspired him to explore our connection with the stars. He undertook his own research into ancient history and its links with celestial phenomena. With astronomy software, he reconstructed how the skies appeared in antiquity and came to see certain myths as stories written in the night sky, where stars and constellations perform in a heavenly theatre.
In 2024, he developed an animated show, “Gilgamesh – King on Earth and in the Sky,” which presents the Epic of Gilgamesh in both on earth and among the constellations. The show highlights how today’s constellations fit within this ancient myth and offers an accessible introduction to astronomy, early history, and the human condition. A book of the same title followed, published in September 2025.
Geert is now working to bring Earth-Sky Stories to Planetairiums worldwide.
